HOW I STYLE; MANNEQUINS

Since I started working in retail I've always found a great appreciation for visual merchandising and mannequin styling. Every time the opportunity has arisen to do either of these jobs I have jumped at the chance to get involved. I find it to be such an interesting way to step out of my own fashion comfort zone and truly think about what the customers needs are as the demographic can be completely opposite to myself.

Autumn/Winter fashion in my current job at George ASDA heavily focuses on the warm neutral tones of oranges and browns with lots of different textures such as knit, corduroy and denim. The first trend of the A/W 2019 was called cashmere dreams (right). As it was still transitioning from warmer weather I decided I would keep the summery silhouettes of skirts and dresses but given them an autumnal feel. In the first outfit I wanted to mix some texture and pattern by styling a brown knit jumper with a subtle cable knit to the front with a hounds tooth printed skirt with the same tone of the jumper running through the various browns and oranges of the design. I then decided to go for a slightly more conservative outfit for my second mannequin to keep it more work appropriate or for the woman who doesn't want as much skin showing. The floaty blouse keeps the outfit comfortable yet still smart and the tie at the waist keeps the feminine shape flattering. For the bottoms I stuck with a pair of simple blue denim skinny jeans as most people will already have these in their wardrobe and they can be dressed up or dressed down. For my final outfit in this trend I wanted to style a more youthful and playful outfit for those in the younger end of the demographic. Pinafore dresses were a huge thing within the brand this year in both denim and corduroy, I decided to opt for a cord version to add another texture to this group of looks with a white t-shirt layered underneath for a bit more depth to the outfit.

Moving onto the next trend of the season was Creme Brulee (left), this still focused on the same colours and textures however leaning towards a more mustard pallet and more leather thrown into the mix. Still holding out hope for some nicer weather I styled a floral dress with an over sized faux fur coat. The pattern of the dress gives a slight nod into the usual florals we will be seeing reappear next season but keeping the colour scheme to the blacks and oranges. I really wanted to see how many different textures I could bring to look 2 without them all competing with each other so I kept the majority of the outfit black and white with a pop of mustard to spice things up. The silk top and leather skirt bring an edge to the outfit and could be dressed up or down depending on the shoes however in this case I decided to give it a more casual feel by throwing a chunky knitted cardigan over the top with a slight drape off the shoulder to make it seem effortless but still chic. As in the previous trend I always like to throw in an easier outfit with jeans for the more dressed down woman. Here I stuck with denim straight leg fit and a brown mock neck jumper that would look good on all shapes and sizes, I did however feel like the outfit lacked something originally so I threw a black leather backpack on which also tied in with the leather skirt in the other outfit.

Moving onto December as Christmas party season approaches things started to get a lot darker and more sparkly in store. 80% of the party wear we sell is majority black coloured with the odd few pinks and greens dotted in to make sure its not completely monochrome. A black faux fur jacket can never go wrong in party season as it will always elevate a look, to make sure the dress didn't get lost beneath all the darkness I opted for a material with glitter running through it to add a bit more texture and depth whilst also keeping the party spirit. I wanted to also chose an outfit that was simple and for the person who doesn't necessarily have a lot of money to spend on a different aspects of an outfit, or doesn't want to put too much thought into styling different pieces so a jumpsuit was perfect for this. The emerald green satin gives the outfit a really luxurious look and feel. With a full length bottom and covered shoulders it stays modest whilst not loosing your shape with the satin tie around the waist. Something that reappears every Christmas at George is the sequin blazer which is a huge favourite amongst customers. I wanted to let the jacket do most of the talking for this outfit whilst also choosing a pair of waxed jeggings to compliment the piece. Sticking with the emerald green tone of the jumpsuit I picked a twisted blouse in a colour and material to keep all three outfits cohesive with each other.

For the final bit of party wear before Christmas I wanted to go full glam and bring the sequins out in full force. At first glance of the dress on the hanger I wasn't sure whether I could make it work or not as its shape was very boxy, to help make it more flattering I added a belt which broke up the sequins making it seem less in your face. Of course the party essentials of a jumpsuit and the sequin blazer had to make another appearance in this group of looks. The black structured fit of this jumpsuit gave it a more professional feel whilst the rhinestone belt kept it feeling festive and the jacket boosts the extravagance to another level making it perfect for a work Christmas do. To lighten up the pallet and appeal to those who may not want to wear all black I went for a pink option. The top and jacket styled together here compliment each other so much with the varying tones of pink and the contrasted texture of a mesh type material and faux feather jacket. This outfit brings a new feel to this group of looks as it adds a much more playful and flirty feel to the festive season
